Global Language Convention 2008 - ideas were shared, participants were 'inspired'

"It was a superb professional learning experience with everything to offer:
great networking opportunities, comfortable surroundings, excellent,
informative sessions, inspiring, funny and informative keynotes from
recognized experts in the field, good food and coffee, and even a foray
into local culture..."

" Seldom have I have been more intellectually stimulated and inspired. "

"The quality of workshops and presenters, the attention to details, everything was so well done. Thank you!"

April 17-20, 2008, CASIE, in cooperation with the International Baccalaureate, hosted the Second Global Language Convention (GLC), at Atlanta International School. The GLC was a major language education event and provided a forum for stimulating, disseminating and discussing research on language education. Convention attendees represented over 20 countries and joined together to discuss language immersion programs within the framework of the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum as well as in schools that do not use the IB programmes.  The convention showcased best practices from 8 Featured Schools while offering several workshops that gave teachers tools to use immediately in the classroom along with research and discussions on language learning

Attendees were addressed by BBC Correspondent Katty Kay who gave the keynote speech on Friday, April 18th. Ms. Kay discussed her own exposure to learning languages and how that experience shaped the person she is today. She also discussed the political and economical necessity for languages to be taught, specifically in the United States. Dr. Colin Baker joined GLC participants via video-conferencing from Bangor, Wales, to give Saturday morning's keynote address. Dr. Baker explored the various systematic approaches to Dual Language education side by side to the benefits it has for each individual child. The GLC wrapped up with a vibrant speech by Dr. Myriam Met on Sunday, April 20th. Dr. Met brought to life various myths versus facts about language learning and discussed key elements to making a language immersion programme successful.
