The New Building Your IB Programme: Primary Years Workshop

Building Your IB Programme Workshop

The former Making the PYP Happen: Implementing Agency and Making the PYP Happen in the Early Years: Implementing Agency workshops will be replaced with a new workshop beginning January 2025: Building Your IB Programme: Primary Years. This essential new workshop provides the foundational knowledge for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) so that educators around the world can bring an IB education to life for their PYP students.

Understanding the IB requirements

The IB has professional development requirements for all four programmes and one unique requirement for PYP. It is required that all PYP teachers hired during the period under review participate in an IB workshop. The Building Your IB Programme: Primary Years (BYIBP) workshop is recommended for all PYP teachers that are new or have some experience in the PYP and will provide a strong base for understanding IB and the Primary Years Programme.

PYP Workshop Objectives

The primary goals and objectives of the workshop are to explore three provocations:

  1. How does an IB education develop lifelong learners that are internationally-minded, agentic, and demonstrate the IB learner profile traits.
  2. How do the IB approaches to teaching and approaches to learning support students in acquiring the skills and attitudes for academic and personal success?
  3. How does creating a learning environment that is inquiry-based build curiosity and deeper understanding of concepts and contexts.

Educators will begin to think about how these programme elements look in their school’s and classroom’s contexts.

Importance of the BYIBP Workshop

This workshop is important to provide new educators in the PYP a solid foundation for not only their professional journey in contributing to their schools’ IB programme, but also for discovering their connection to the IB’s mission. The learning experiences will allow PYP educators to be better equipped to bring that IB mission to reality and adopt the IB and PYP language.

PYP Framework Knowledge

The realization of how the PYP framework that supports the actualization of the IB mission will be constructed through the workshop collaborative work. The three pillars of the PYP curriculum
framework, the learner, learning and teaching, and the learning community, will be introduced as part of the transdisciplinary model of the programme.

Preparation for Programme Delivery

The new workshop prepares educators for organizing how to create a PYP environment, culture, and learning that brings the IB purpose to life. The tools of the programme’s framework organize the curriculum as well as the learning community. Having the time and guidance to inquire about PYP elements, contemplate possible actions, and reflect on how to deliver an IB education is essential for educators to feel capable in their roles.

Professional Growth

The IB programme standards and practices have four sections: Purpose, Environment, Culture, and Learning. In the Environment standard, there is a practice that IB schools aspire to which is to ensure that educators receive “appropriate and timely professional learning to inform their practice.” To provide an IB education to students, the BYIBP workshop is the perfect start towards achieving this goal. Additionally, it is the background for future IB professional learning opportunities.

Recognition

The BYIBP workshop will bring recognition upon completion through the awarding of an IB certificate of completion of the workshop that is recognized throughout the IB worldwide community. The IB requires 15 hours of professional learning time in an official IB workshop to receive a certificate for the workshop.

Planning for New and Newer Staff to Attend a Workshop

It is good practice for the school to have established processes for planning IB induction activities for new and newer staff. The areas for consideration include:

  • Identification of who needs to be involved in the school’s IB induction process
  • The timeline for each induction event
  • The budget for the induction cycle
  • The activities that will make up the induction process
